Montana Producers Attend Wheat Marketing Tour

The first week of March the Montana Wheat and Barley Committee hosted 6 producers on a spring tour to Portland, Oregon. They visited the Wheat Marketing Center and learned how our check off dollars are used to provide technical training and research for overseas millers and bakers. Other activities included:

  • Visited with Jake Greenberg, founder of Classic Foods, who produces pasta with Montana durum for Portland area restaurants.
  • Heard from Michael Anderson from U.S Wheat Associates about the current challenges and successes of the overseas wheat market.
  • Spoke with Ron Williams, vice president of Columbia Grain, about their investments in Montana.
  • Toured the United Grain export terminal with their grain traders.
  • Learned about BNSF’s current rail demand from expert Greg Guthrie.
  • Received a grain grading demonstration from the Federal Grain Inspection Service.

It was a busy two days with lots of great conversation with export industry experts. Being able to see how important this supply chain is to rural Montana is motivating for our producers to raise the highest quality wheat they possibly can. The volume of grain handled by our ports is hard to understand until you see it. One Handymax vessel holds about 1.8 million bushels of wheat - at 45 bu/acre that’s equal to 40,000 harvested acres! If you are interested in participating in the next tour in December 2020 please contact Sam Anderson at the Montana Wheat & Barley Committee - Samuel.Anderson@mt.gov.
